When I say ‘props’, people often picture random coffee cups, white foam blocks, or those same five stock flat lays with a bunch of roses that haunt Pinterest.
But in the right hands, props aren’t filler, they’re a language. They’re how your brand speaks without words. They can be the quickest, most human way to say ‘this is me’.
Whether you’re a creative founder, a product-based business, or a service provider with a strong personality, props have the power to turn your visuals into stories people actually feel.
1. Props as story anchors
A prop isn’t just an object, it’s a clue.
The right prop instantly communicates who you are and what you value. A vintage notebook might suggest creativity and care. A mismatched teacup might whisper nostalgia and warmth. A disco ball on a desk? Confidence and play.
Every prop adds a layer of context, and together with a strong colour story, they build a visual language that your audience begins to recognise as you.

2. Visual consistency = recognition
One well-chosen prop can thread your entire brand together.
If your Instagram grid, Pinterest boards, and website photos all feature recurring themes, shapes, colours, or textures, you’re creating instant brand recall, before a single word is read. It’s how brands become ‘felt’ rather than ‘seen’. Props can be your shorthand for identity.

3. The emotion behind the object
Props are emotional translators. They don’t just show what you do, they show how it feels to experience your brand.
- A messy cluster of pens, paper scraps, and polaroids can communicate creative energy.
- A collection of soft fabrics and natural textures says calm and considered.
- Bright colour and contrast tells the world: this brand likes to have fun.
When your audience feels something before they think something, they connect faster and stay longer.
4. Props in creative product photography
This is where art direction meets storytelling.
For commercial brands, props turn a set into a story. They set the tone, define the audience, and position the product in its emotional world.
- A candle becomes comfort when styled with old books and gentle light.
- A skincare bottle becomes freshness when paired with citrus slices and water droplets.
- A bold piece of jewellery becomes art when surrounded by colour-blocked paper and sculptural shapes.
Props help your product show up like a character, not a commodity.

5. My prop collection: a world of storytelling
If you’ve ever seen my studio shelves, you know: I’m a collector of stuff with soul. (The images throughout this post are inventory of some of the items from my collection).
Charity shop finds, vintage crockery, real-looking sweet treats, colour-blocked plinths, handwritten notes, silk ribbons, rotary phones, flowers, colourful tech, toys, and the occasional odd treasure that just feels right for that one brief that makes it worth holding onto.
This ever-growing prop collection is the backbone of my work. Every object has the potential to become part of your visual story.
When I build your shoot, I don’t start with ‘what looks nice’. I start with what feels true, and then I curate a world of props around it.
6. Longevity: why great props never expire
Trends shift, algorithms change, but beautifully styled still life photography endures.
Images built on thoughtful prop styling and strong art direction don’t just live in the moment, they live on. They perform on websites, social media, pitch decks, and especially on Pinterest, where they continue to drive attention for years (I should know, as the majority of my traffic comes from images pinned on Pinterest years ago!).
That’s the beauty of well-designed still life imagery: it’s timeless. It’s strategy disguised as beauty.

7. The human side of visual storytelling
Whether I’m creating still life libraries for your personal brand or producing a commercial campaign, the process is the same: I start by getting to the heart of your story, your colours, your energy, your vibe, and translate that into tangible, lasting visuals.
Objects can tell stories that words can’t.
So the next time you see a still life image that feels alive, know this: it’s not the camera or the lens that makes it special. It’s the meaning built into every single thing inside the frame.
And that’s exactly what I love creating.
